Southern Road Trip (Part Two)

Now in Durham, North Carolina, I immediately head to visit my childhood friend, the ingenious cook and renowned author, Sara Foster, at her café and market, "Foster's Market"! Here we are together (below).

Foster’s Market has innumerable pie options and delicious creations to-go or eat-in, as well (see below).

In Durham we went to Chelsea Antiques where I picked up some beautiful candles for rumba. In Raleigh, NC I visited Father and Son Antiques (a spot without a website, but lauded by the NYT several years ago) and enjoyed an amazing lunch at Beasley's Chicken and Honey, a new restaurant downtown serving classic Southern fare - fried chicken, biscuits, pimiento cheese, mac and cheese, collards, chess pie, and more. Chef Ashley Christensen was headed to Memphis in May for their annual barbeque cook off and then to NYC where she was invited to cook at the James Beard house.

Naturally, I did a quick speed design on Sara's house before leaving Durham and Sara send Debbie and me on our way with a dozen of her home-baked cookies, which kept our blood sugar kicking for the last leg of our trip.

Back in Nashville, my cousin Trudy Caldwell took me to her friend Jo Ella McClellan’s cool shop called “Surroundings”, where I did a little shopping and art-scouting (photos courtesy of Surroundings below). Her shop reminded me of rumba’s mix of furniture and art. I particularly loved her choice of lamps and purchased three to be shipped back. At the LeQuire Gallery nearby I discovered Somers Randolph, an outstanding sculptor and jewelry maker. I sent back some incredible finds from my Southern adventure and you can see them at rumba now!
